We announce the publication of the paper ” Experiments and Comparison of Digital Twinning of Photovoltaic Panels by Machine Learning Models and A Cyber-Physical Model in Modelica” in the scientific journal “IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics“.
The Dofware team, in collaboration with UNITO, has implemented as part of the HOME project a model capable of reproducing the behavior and productivity of photovoltaic panels.
The approach is the result of the cooperation between physical and Machine Learning models.
Modelica developed a digital twin of the photovoltaic panel focused on the reproduction of its physical properties, while with the application of Machine Learning techniques the data collected in the field were exploited to generate an alternative digital twin. The best result was obtained by integrating the two approaches, arriving at very accurate and reliable predictions.
This solution opens the way to new ways of development, in which physical-numerical and machine-learning models can quickly and effectively contribute to improvements that have so far been difficult to predict, not only in the photovoltaic field.

The use of open standards such as Modelica and FMI is a key enabler to better understand the behaviour of systems and to work and communicate accurately with partners and suppliers. Dymola is not only capable to support an ad-hoc modelling level, such as functional behaviour or detailed design, but is also able to convert these predictive models into real time models thanks to Modelica language and Dymola symbolic manipulation of equations.

Main Changes in Modelica 3.4
The following backward compatible extensions have been introduced with Modelica 3.4:
- Automatic conversions between different versions.
- Flattening is clearly specified.
- Convert from Integer to Enumeration.
- Explicitly casting a Model to Record.
- Initialization of Clocked Continuous States.
- An added option to Ellipse Annotation to draw only an arc.
- Allowing mixed Real and non-Real Record Derivatives.
- Refinement of pure/impure functions in particular to restore backwards compatibility with Modelica 3.2.
- Additionally, about 120 minor improvements were made.

Further enhanced search and diagram component filtering capabilities make model navigation easier, especially for large and complex systems.
Built-in support for model version management is compatible with GIT, as well as CVS and SVN.Dymola can also make a direct checkout from GitHub.
Simulation results are easier to analyze with a new interactive measurement cursor which allow easy inspection of multiple result points.
